Hal and Noi live in the Aina Haina area of Honolulu, and renewed their vows at their 50th Year Golden Anniversary with a photo and video shoot at the University of Hawaii in Manoa. They were married in Thailand 50 years ago at the Royal Theater of King Rama III’s summer palace in Nakorn Phathom. Hal met Noi while serving as a US Peace Corps Volunteer in Thailand 1963 -1965. They were married in a traditional Thai ceremony on Dec. 27, 1968. Hal and Noi moved to Hawaii in June of 1972 to attend graduate school at the University of Hawaii where Hal was awarded his MA Degree in Urban and Regional Planning in May 1974. Their son was born Jan. 15, 1970 in Bangkok and their daughter May 26, 1971. Hal’s career included 15 years as an Urban Planning Advisor in 6 Asian countries for the United Nations and 10 years with the City of Honolulu. Their rule for marriage success is that each partner must be willing to give not just 50%, but a minimum of 60%. The 20% overlap ensures sufficient patience with each other during periods of disagreement.
